Artist: Patrick Dougherty

Happy Art Friday, friends! Today I’m featuring the awesome (literally!) work of Patrick Dougherty. He works with saplings on a grand scale. This first piece is called Just Around the Corner, and it’s installed at the University of Southern Indiana. Don’t you just want to wander inside and, I don’t know, sit in the dark? LOL

This next piece has the BEST title: Doin The Locomotion. More proof that titles of artwork can really increase the enjoyment/understanding of art.

Finally, my favorite. Na Hale ‘o waiawi (Wild Dwellings Built From Strawberry Guava) The super cool part is that this can be seen at the Contemporary Art Museum, Honolulu, Hawaii, and I’M GOING THERE IN JANUARY!!! Gotta love time share exchanges.
If you’d like to view more of Dougherty’s work visit his website. Or there’s this neat video showing how he built one of his piece on a storefront on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles.

Have a fantastic weekend!

Artist: Raymond M. Nelson

Happy Art Friday! Isn’t this a beautiful piece? This is hand-blown glass and believe it or not, it’s a SINK! Can you imagine? It’s so beautiful that it seems wrong to spit your toothpaste in it. LOL To me, part of it looks like stylized sheet music. If only I had the type of house and decor that would merit such a piece.

Anyway, this guy does other gorgeous things with glass. Check out his website if you’d like to see more. Have a glorious weekend!

Artist: Levi van Veluw

Happy Art Friday.

I guess I’m in a “choose strange art” mood lately. Here is a guy from the Netherlands who does only self-portraits. He works alone, and I find myself thinking about his process. He must have incredible patience, double jointed arms and lots of mirrors to do what he does.

Here is his website if you’d like to see more.

Have a great weekend!

02.20.2009 Art, Photography

Artist: Lucy McRae and Bart Hess

Lucy McRae and Bart Hess describe themselves on their blogsite as “an instinctual stalking of fashion, architecture, performance and the body. They share a fascination with genetic manipulation and beauty expression.”

A lot of the time artist statements like this go right over my head. I did major in art in college, but it was graphic design (logos, packaging, advertising), which was a little more “mainstream”. I don’t pretend to be an esoteric gal. But I know what I like when I see it even if I can’t analyze why.

Still, I think these two pieces are quite interesting to look at. The first is Exploded View, the second, Exploded View Part Two.

Enjoy your weekend!
